All of us have had moments where we crave excitement. Even when we enjoy the routine and simplicity of life, there will be times where we want to try something new and different. Many of us tend to live our lives routinely, with just a few moments where we do something joyous and exciting. For instance, some of us work to live and save the excitement for the week long holiday you’ve been planning the last 6 months. However, many of us want a life that is filled with excitement and not just for several weeks during the year, but regularly throughout our lives. Below are 14 simple ways that you can make your life more exciting.
Plan something. I used to be the person who enjoyed getting invited to things. I rarely planned anything and would just wait to be invited to a party, dinner outing, road trip and so on. This was okay with me for some time until I realized that I needed to start planning things. There were so many things I wanted to do with friends but nobody was going to plan them for me. As a result I took the role of planning things. You don’t have to plan everything every time, but you can make an effort to organize a get together with friends or throw a party. A nice side effect of becoming a planner, is that you are typically the person people make sure to invite to their events too.
Reprioritize. Having an exciting life may involve you just carving out more time for things you do enjoy. I have a friend who loves doing trivia nights. This is a form of excitement in his life. However, he invested far too much time into work. When he wasn’t working, he was studying. After a year of this, he felt like life was dull and lonely and constantly had excuses to not go to trivia night or other events that brought him excitement. Then one day he made the decision to reprioritize his life. He still invested a good amount of energy into work and studying, but he also reserved a couple of nights a week towards trivia and other activities he found exciting. When you make room for things that bring you excitement, you’ll be more likely to do exciting things. If you find you are investing too much time into things that you find dull, then figure out a way to reprioritize or make more time for fun and excitement.
Surround yourself with fun and exciting people. Life can feel a bit dull if most of your friends are stuck in a boring routine. This may be a good time to make some more friends who are living exciting lives that provide them with meaning and happiness. Being around people who are pursuing exciting opportunities, will encourage you to also continue living an exciting life too.
Step away from the TV, computer or phone. Being glued to the computer or TV may be taking away time to do something exciting and fun. You may not even realize it is happening. Currently, I take 2 classes a week, have a couple of nights where I catch up with friends and usually another night reserved for something exciting. On average, I usually only use my computer for leisure a couple of nights a week. After socializing with friends and doing things that are fun and exciting to me, I don’t have any time to watch TV or browse on the computer. You may not even realize how much time you invest into watching TV and the computer. Designate a few days where you avoid TV, computer or your phone for leisure. This will leave you more time for exciting things.
Try a new look. Give yourself a fun makeover. Try some new highlights, a new wardrobe, clip in hair extensions, different makeup styles, or style your hair differently. A new look can give your life a nice boost of excitement.
Take your partner on a spontaneous date. You may be looking for excitement in your relationship. The best way to add excitement is to try something different. Go on a fun and romantic date. Do something that you guys haven’t done before or in a long time. Book a spot for one of the nicest restaurants in town, try going on an unusual date like participating in an escape room, go to a theme park for the day, go on a spontaneous road trip. You can even spice up your date by trying something new in the bedroom.
Take a class. Participate in a semester long course or even a one off class. You don’t even have to be 100% sure about the class. Try a course you’ve been interested in doing but haven’t yet. Check out discount websites to see if you can get a deal on dancing, cooking or language courses. Enrolling in a class will give you the momentum to start pushing yourself towards actively having an exciting life.
Do something big that is expensive but that you’ve always wanted to do. Perhaps you want to go sky diving, a trek in South America, a road trip across the country or start a new business venture. Whatever you’ve been dying to do, save the money and just do it. Sometimes doing something really big that we’ve always wanted to do can kick start us into making this a pattern in our lives. Making the decision to volunteer and travel solo in Thailand was the one thing that really helped me actively take a role in making my life exciting and meaningful. After getting past the hurdle of traveling alone, I felt like I was up for any exciting challenge in the future.
Stop making excuses. Excuses may be one of the biggest reasons you aren’t making exciting changes in your life. I have a friend who after 3 years of excuses finally made the decision to relocate. He could have done this sooner but excuses, and ultimately fear of change was the one thing stopping him from making this move. Recognize when your excuses are inhibiting you from allowing you to move your life forward.
Get more rest. You may be using tiredness as a reason for why you feel your life can’t be more exciting. Mental and physical fatigue may be having a tremendous impact on your lifestyle. Spend more time getting adequate amounts of rest. This might involve you needing to sleep earlier. Consider investing in a massage or something therapeutic such as yoga to encourage relaxation. Getting more rest may involve you taking better care of your physical health such as eating better and getting regular exercise.
Change your routines. Bringing excitement into your life doesn’t have to be big or involve money. Excitement can stem from a simple change in routine. I am naturally not a morning person at all. However, nowadays I find myself awake early in the morning regardless. I switched my routine to involve exercise and sleeping earlier which has allowed me to feel more energetic throughout the day. I also walk 40 minutes every day to the office and sometimes jog home after work. Public transport can get me to the office much more quickly and conveniently but by allowing walks outside into my routine, I feel like I have more energy and excitement into my life and start my day energized. Think about ways you can switch your routine. Maybe you can eat a big breakfast outside on your patio, read a book before work, and go to the gym during your lunch breaks and so on.
Do something kind. Kindness will improve the mood of people around you and yourself. Incorporate good deeds into your day. Donate money to someone in need. Donate your clothes to a shelter. Volunteer your time during the weekends at an animal shelter. Give a stranger a compliment. Do chores for someone who really needs it. Let someone know how much you appreciate them in your life.
Try different things. Take a different path to work. Try listening to different music. Put on a movie that everyone seems to love but you assume you won’t like. Give things a chance that you normally wouldn’t.
Work on your attitude. What we find exciting will change dramatically as our priorities change. I still love travelling but seeing the world was far more exciting to me a few years ago than it is today. Nowadays I get more excitement from spending time with my partner, spending quality time with friends, reading, writing, exercising and working on things that I love. There will be times where you aren’t financially able to do everything you’d like to do as well. There will be other times where your idea of excitement will change. Revaluate what is important to you now and work on your attitude. There are multiple ways to have excitement in your life as well. Adjust your attitude so that you understand there are opportunities for excitement in your grasp.
By actively working to make your life more exciting, you’ll naturally start to do more exciting and fun things. The transition won’t happen overnight but as you start to incorporate new and different things into your life, it will become easier to pursue things that are thrilling to you.
